Josef Mengele changed the lives of many people. Families were split up and eventually put to death. Every child that went to the camp looked up to Mengele as a fatherly figure; even though they knew that at any point, they could be killed. Mengele gained trust through candy, clothes, somewhat good food, proper hygiene (to begin with) and even a bed to sleep on. Each child gets tattooed a number which signifies when their experimentation is up. After the trust is there, Mengele waits for their number to be called to experiment in a special way on the child. There was never a known answer to whether he or she would come back. Later throughout the years, Mengele was frightened when a leader was captured, so he moved to Paraguay, and then Brazil. On a vacation, he went swimming. He suffered a stroke and drowned in 1979.
