Mengele did numerous amounts of research in his lifetime, along with thousands of experiments. His focus, as before, was set on twins. He was destined to create a future full of blonde hair and blue-eyed people. Countless surgeries took place. Blood transfusions, chemical injections (chloroform in the brain and chemicals in the eyes), sex change operations, removal of limbs and organs, pressure and gas chambers, along with other forms of torture were often done. Twins as young as 5 years old, but taller than 5’2”, could take place in the victims chair. An experiment Mengele is widely known for is the case involving the twins of Auschwitz.
“One day, my twin brother, Tibi, was taken away for some special experiments. Dr. Mengele had always been more interested in Tibi. I am not sure why – perhaps because he was the older twin. Mengele made several operations on Tibi. One surgery on his spine left my brother paralyzed. He could not walk anymore. Then they took out his sexual organs. After the fourth operation, I did not see Tibi anymore… “ (Bülow).
Another experiment, one of thousands, was when he sewed a set of twins together to create siamese twins. The victims were twin boys, Tito and Nino. One of the boys was found to have a hunchback, which was the reason Mengele was interested in him. They were brought to the camp by SS officers, and returned home three days later. Within the three days, the boys had been sewn together back to back at the hunch and wrists. An infection had set in, for when they returned, they were filthy and smelled of gangrene. They later died from his experiment. They weren't the first siamese experiment, or the last. Mengele's schooling in medicine should have helped save the lives of people; however, it overtook his thoughts, making him an abuser.
